Woxna's development of the first ever Damasteel saw

I know that no one really needs a Damascus saw. But from the very beginning of starting Woxna, I kept on asking the same question to myself and the team: What would it look like to build the most extraordinary saw in the world?

That question led us here - to the creation of the world’s first Damascus steel foldable saw, launching soon on Kickstarter!

Why Damascus?

A year ago, we were deep into prototyping our Hälsing and Ljusnan models when we started brainstorming: What would the most luxurious saw look like? Maybe Gold? Maybe Titanium? No… Then someone, I honestly can’t remember if it was me or someone in the team, said: “What about Damascus steel?”

And right there and then, we just moved on with what we were doing. But weeks later, we couldn’t shake the idea.

Damascus has always been legendary - layered steel with patterns that echo ancient artistry and cutting performance that’s hard to rival. But it had never been used in a foldable saw. That’s when we knew: this wasn’t just a cool idea. This could be history-making.

The Process: From Challenge to Craft

This project wasn’t easy. We had never worked with stainless Damascus steel before. And with Damasteel® - one of the world’s best manufacturers located just two hours from our factory, the bar was set very high.

Stainless steel is much harder to work with than carbon steel, we know that from the development of our Ljusnan model and the fact that is it very uncommon in the saw industry to work with stainless, so learnings from others is limited in this field compared to for example knife making. 

We perfected our manufacturing techniques on 10C28Mo2 stainless steel first, that steel is not cheap either, but given how many of them burnt in the manufacturing process, we knew we could not afford to experiment like that on Damascus. So we took our time, fine-tuned every detail with our first creations, and only moved to Damascus once we knew our process was ready to meet its standards. And finally, we brought that vision to life: the first-ever foldable saw forged from real damascus steel.

Just like our models Hälsning and Ljusnan, the damascus saw comes in both 7 and 10 in lengths, they have a 3-phased grind for pull-cutting, giving control and ease with every stroke. It also has:

• The Dense Twist™ pattern, inspired by the bark of pine trees in Hälsingland
• A matte-etched finish that hides wear and reflects our Scandinavian aesthetic - rugged, raw, and real

When we held the first working prototype, I honestly thought: This is too beautiful to use. But then we cut some trees with it… and wow. The performance matched the beauty.

So why Kickstarter?

We’re a small brand, built from the ground up with our own time and money invested into it. We simply cannot afford to purchase large quantities of the Damascus steel ourselves to launch this product in the way it deserves. But this Damasucs saw also deserves to be launched with a community that’s passionate about and interested in it. Every backer truly makes a difference. Our early supporters will not only be the first in the world to own a Damascus steel foldable saw - they’ll be part of this chapter of the Woxna story.
