Linseed oil for wood and linseed oil for rust protection – What is really the difference?

We often get the question: "Can't I just use the same oil for the whole saw?" The short answer is that you can, but for the best results, the organic fibers of a wooden handle and the hard surface of a steel blade require different types of care.
Here, we explain why you should keep your oils separate to ensure your saw lasts for generations.
Linseed oil – The lifesaver for your wooden handles
Wood is a living material that breathes. Whether you are holding the robust oak handle of a Hälsing or the elegant walnut handle of a Ljusnan, the wood needs the right kind of protection to stay healthy year after year. This is where our linseed oil (priming oil) shines.
This oil is unique because it is completely free from the fatty acids and waxes found in standard linseed oil. This gives it an extremely low surface tension and a penetrating power that reaches deep into the wood's microstructure. Once inside, the oil oxidizes and hardens into an internal barrier. This provides the wood with crucial advantages:
- Water-repellent from within: By saturating the fibers, it prevents water from penetrating the wood.
- Preserves dimensions: It reduces the risk of the wood shrinking or moving, which prevents cracking and ensures the handle maintains its shape and function.
- Natural finish: It dries completely and becomes a permanent part of the material, while highlighting the beautiful natural grain of the wood.
Rust protection oil – Optimized protection for the steel
When we talk about the saw blade, the challenge is different from that of wood. Here, we need a protection that doesn't just penetrate, but creates an impenetrable shield against corrosion.
Many people use standard linseed oil on the metal as well, which certainly provides a basic level of protection. However, for truly reliable rust protection, you need an oil that is completely unaffected by water. Our rust protection oil is a refined product where the components that can react with moisture have been removed.
Our rust protection oil is optimized to:
- Be completely water-repellent: It forms a dense surface that never emulsifies with moisture or forms a gel.
- Stay put: It penetrates the microstructure of the metal and remains on the blade even during intensive work.
- Provide long-term security: It is resistant to biological degradation, ensuring the protection stays intact over a long time in the tool shed.
Summary
Think of it this way: Linseed oil provides nourishment and dimensional stability to the wood, while rust protection oil provides the most effective defense for the steel. By giving both the handle and the blade the right care, you ensure that your saw performs at its best and can be passed down for generations.
